Happy Birthday, America
Mom ferrying kids home at the end of the school day. Who says you need an SUV?! Saigon, February 2004.
I like this photo of a typical Saigon afternoon scene: Instead of pulling up to a school in a Chevy Suburban or other SUV, parents in Saigon drive up on scooters to take their kids home. Not that this has anything to do with the Fourth of July.
What I am doing this holiday weekend (thanks for this list idea from brigitav):
1) Run 8 miles. Gotta keep training for the Army 10-miler this fall. Whenever I don't want to run, I think of my cardio/weights teacher, P. When my muscles are quivering with fatigue and I'm about to quit, she hollers, "SUCK IT UP!"
Yes, ma'am.
2) Get my bike out of storage, tune it up, and go for a ride down the beautiful Mt. Vernon trail along the Potomac river. If you want a dose of Washington history, this trail is for you. You have great views of the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials, the Capitol, the Washington Monument, and other cultural pitstops from this 18.5 mile trail. It ends at George Washington's home and verdant gardens.
3) Watch "The Stepford Wives." I read the book when I was a kid, and I'm intrigued to see a 2004 interpretation of it. FYI: Mary Stuart Masterson (see post below) made her screen debut as a 7-year old moppet in the 1975 film version.
4) Watch "The Hunting of the President" with my friend S., then watch the Capitol fireworks over the Mall with her and my SO.
5) Write my essay for writing class. Another chance to air my thoughts in front of an unsuspecting public.
6) Return phone calls from friends and clean the damn house. The dust bunnies are starting to gang up on me.
7) Read for pleasure, not work (see "On My Nightstand" at left).
Hmm. This is an ambitious list. Better start working on it.
Happy Independence Day, folks.
