Once More, With Feeling

I swear to God, it's a miracle I'm not 300 pounds.

Not only do I have a huge appetite (I am known for polishing off other people's plates). Much of the food I eat is full of fat, sugar and other bad things.

Just some of the junk food I've eaten in the past few days: French fries. Jelly-filled doughnuts. A Five Guys little hamburger (which was not so little). Coke Blak. Girl Scout "thin mints" cookies.

Thank god for a fast metabolism. Thank god for my daily 2.5-mile walk to and from the Metro subway system. Thank god I run.

I have also eaten more nutritious dishes this week, e.g. Thai ginger noodles with tofu and snap peas, and wok-seared chicken and broccoli. But I need to eat more healthfully in general.

Making it Official: So herewith, once again, for real, I am giving up doughnuts (very sad, I know) for yoghurt and granola. No more pizza (sob). No more fries. (Except on road trips. Road trips don't count.) I will eat a little less rice and other high-calorie carbs and imbibe more vegetables.

I will be more virtuous. At least gastronomically-speaking.

  1. I'm with you on the donuts and the fries (never eat them) but pizza? I mean really - pizza??? THE WORLD'S MOST PERFECT FOOD???!! You might want to reconsider.

If I ate like you I WOULD weigh 300 pounds in spite of all the working out.

  3. i agree on the pizza! i try to eat relatively healthfully (mostly because i just feel better that way) and i really think there is a place in a good diet for pizza. not like, daily, but sometimes! there are even relatively healthy ways to make and get pizza (whole wheat crust, lighter on the cheese, lots of veggies). the same cannot be said for krispy kreme.

  5. Bex ... disregard the last sentence in my deleted post. Your blog sits just before Nicole's in my BLOGLINES listing and I thought I was responding to hers. Remarkably, your post made perfect sense in the context of her blog ... sort of scary.

Anyway ... the Girl Scout cookies are OK. They are oh so good and will be gone gone gone very soon. All the trans-fat in the fries will eventually kill you and doughnuts are like a dim-witted lover ... they're just one-dimensional and you'll eventually grow tired of them.

    Good luck.

  6. If you want to cut out the fat, it would be easier to just switch from doughnuts to donuts ...

  7. yeah, those freakin' girl scouts!!! What kind of person would knowingly buy such kind of legalized--HEROIN!

You might want to get your cholesterol checked. Just sayin'...

and going cold turkey on the DONUTS could be a wee bit hard...maybe one a week? as a reward?

    You are eating better already.

  8. Give up doughnuts if you must but check out the nutritional content on that granola. You'd be surprised how much fat and how many calories it has. As for rice, try eating brown, if you don't already. Bored of brown? Try Thai red or black rice. Very tasty and much better for you than white.
