Slow Down!

That's what my coach said as I rounded the track on Tuesday night, in my 4th 800 interval. I was (and still am) recovering from a nasty head cold/chest congestion, and I was running my splits too fast to keep up with L.

My throat felt sore after the first 800, and I had a coughing fit after the 3rd. So instead of doing 6 X 800, I did one less. It was only on the last 800 that I came anywhere close to my called-for split time.

I feel a bit sheepish. My legs were itching to run, but my body was saying, "You're still recovering. Slow down!"

My coach scolded me afterwards. Sigh. My splits:

1st 800: 3:32

2nd 800: 3:29 (!)

3rd 800: 3:46 (it's hard to run and cough at the same time)

4th 800: 3:32 ("Take it easy," warned my Coach as I ran by)

5th 800: 3:37

In California: Yesterday, I boarded a jet plane and flew to California. Never again am I taking a cross-country flight with a connection in Houston (3-hr layover). It took me 10 hours to get here! Anyway, we're heading up to Tahoe this morning for a 4-day jaunt.

  2. Fast times at Ridgemont High, esp. since you weren't 100%. Enjoy La La Land.

  3. I spent a few more hours than expected in an airport too, on Wednesday in Austin. My 6:30p finally left at 8:00p.

You guys must have something going down in Tahoe, or you're secretly plotting to take over the town :-)

  4. Flying with a head cold is about as bad as it gets.

Nice splits despite your coaches input.

    Have fun in Tahoe.

  5. I'm sure traveling via air with a head cold is just lovely too. May the thinner air around Tahoe help clear your cough.

  6. Oh -- almost forgot again:

Belated happy birthday wishes. Whaddayaknow, we're the same age (wink wink).

  7. Isn't it interesting how a good coach catches our training mistakes. Good idea to err on the side of recovery.

  8. That's some fast running!

Have fun in Tahoe. I was there about 10 years ago and tried running at 7,000 feet. Tough for someone who lives at sea level!
